Federal prosecutors are reportedly investigating Anthony Weiner over accusations made public earlier this week that was sexting with a minor.
CNN reported Thursday afternoon that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York has issued a subpoena for cell phones and other records belonging to Mr. Weiner, a former Democratic U.S. representative who looked destined to be New York mayor.
“The FBI and the New York Police Department have opened preliminary investigations,” CNN wrote, about charges that surfaced earlier this week in the Daily Mail.
The newspaper reported that Mr. Weiner had exchanged sexually explicit texts and images, including bare-chested photos and rape fantasies, with a girl he knew was 15 years old.
In response to the latest reports, Mr. Weiner said Wednesday that he had “provided the Daily Mail with information showing that I have likely been the subject of a hoax.”
One recent revelation, not the most-current one involving potential charges of corrupting a minor, caused his wife Huma Abedin, one of Hillary Clinton’s closest and most-trusted advisers, to leave Mr. Weiner.
