DETROIT (AP) - City officials and community leaders in Detroit are scheduled to kick off the annual Angels’ Night volunteer recruitment to fight arsons over Halloween.
Mayor Mike Duggan and others will discuss the city’s strategies Monday outside Heilmann Recreation Center on Detroit’s east side.
The Angels’ Night campaign is a long-running response to what used to be known as Devil’s Night, the day before Halloween. In 1984, Detroit had more than 800 fires during the time period.
The anti-arson campaign has been highly successful in cutting down the number of fires over the three-day Halloween period. Only 52 fires were reported last year. In 2014, 97 fires were reported.
More than 4,000 people volunteered last year to help patrol Detroit streets and neighborhoods.
