ST. LOUIS — Donald Trump said in the debate Sunday that Hillary Clinton revealed the “tremendous hate in her heart” when she described his supporters as sexists, racists, xenophobes and Islamophobic.

Mrs. Clinton was widely criticized for saying last month that “half” of Mr. Trump’s supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables” — a group that would included about a quarter of Americans.

Shortly after making the remark, Mrs. Clinton said she regretted saying “half” and she it again at the debate. But she also went a step further.

“I was sorry about the way I talked about that. My argument is not with his supporters but with him and the hateful and divisive campaign he has run,” said Mrs. Clinton.

She said that she wanted to be president for all Americans, including those who do not vote for her.

“She has tremendous hate in her heart. When she said deplorable, she meant it,” said Mr. Trump.
