ST. LOUIS — Early in the debate Sunday, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump suggested the moderators were working against him, describing the debate as “one on three.”

He made the remark after the debate moderators attempted to move on to other questions when he was pressing Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton about her secret email setup as secretary of state.

“I am very committed to protecting classified information,” said Mrs. Clinton.

“For you to say that there was nothing wrong with you deleting 33,000 emails. You should be ashamed of yourself — and after you got a subpoena from the United States Congress,” said Mr. Trump.

He said Mrs. Clinton should “be in jail” for exclusively using a private email account and private email service to handle official business as secretary of state, including mishandling classified material.

Mrs. Clinton noted that she did turn in about 35,000 emails that she deemed work related, but she did not answer Mr. Trump’s question about the ones she permanently erased.

The moderators — CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC News’ Martha Raddatz — attempted to proceed to questions form audience members at the town hall-style debate.

Mr. Trump quipped that the debate was “one on three.”
