FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Republican governor candidate Doug Burgum is releasing his first television advertisement of the general election campaign.
The statewide ad focuses on North Dakota’s budget troubles. In it, Burgum pledges to work with lawmakers to balance the state budget without raising taxes.
He emphasizes zero-based budgeting, which means government programs are financed based on their needs instead of a percentage increase over the previous period.
North Dakota’s top budget-writer said in September that the state is on track to have a more than $7 million deficit when the current two-year budget cycle ends in June 2017. Revenues have taken a hit due to depressed agriculture and oil prices.
Burgum’s campaign declined to disclose the size of the buy. The Fargo businessman faces Democrat Marvin Nelson in November. Nelson’s campaign hasn’t run any television advertisements.
