ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson denounced lewd comments made by Donald Trump on Saturday, saying the remarks disqualify him from being president.
“It’s not acceptable to have the president of the United States speak in that manner,” Johnson said.
He told reporters before a scheduled rally in Albuquerque that he has never used language like that to describe women in his entire life.
The former New Mexico governor said that Trump has said around 150 things that should have ended his campaign but “maybe this is the one that puts him over the top.”
A political firestorm was sparked by a video obtained and released Friday by The Washington Post and NBC News. In the video, Trump, who was married to his current wife at the time, is heard describing attempts to have sex with a married woman to an anchor on the entertainment show, “Access Hollywood.” He also brags about women letting him kiss them and grab their genitals because he is famous.
Trump apologized in a video statement released by his campaign early Saturday morning.
Johnson told The Associated Press that he and vice-presidential nominee Bill Weld are “an honorable alternative” to Republicans who can no longer support Trump.
Polls show Johnson has the highest percentage of support in his home state. Campaign representatives say he could win the state’s five electoral votes.
Johnson is trying to woo voters in the wake of his own public misfires. Last month, he flubbed a question about the war-torn Syria city of Aleppo. During a town hall appearance, he failed to think of a name of a foreign leader he admires.
