EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Freshman Justin Herbert was announced as the starter for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday against Washington.

Herbert competed for the job this week with graduate transfer Dakota Prukop, who started in the Ducks’ first five games. Oregon had lost three straight going into the game against the No. 5 Huskies.

A local prospect out of Eugene’s Sheldon High School, Herbert is the first true freshman to start for the Ducks since Chris Miller in 1983.

Prukop, a graduate transfer from Montana State, has thrown for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns this season with two interceptions. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 132 yards and one interception in a 51-33 loss at Washington State.

Herbert led the team on the Ducks’ final drive against the Cougars, marching the team 85 yards downfield and scoring on a 4-yard keeper.
