LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada’s chief elections officer is extending the deadline to register to vote by mail amid concerns that the current deadline violates federal law.
Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske said late Friday that she’s asking all 17 Nevada county clerks and registrars to accept registration forms postmarked as late as Oct. 11.
The Nevada State Democratic Party sent Cegavske a letter arguing the state’s old, Oct. 8 mail-in voter registration deadline falls more than the required 30 days away from Election Day.
Their concerns echoed a Wednesday letter from two Democratic U.S. senators who want the U.S. Department of Justice to ensure Nevada and nine other states aren’t violating the law over the deadline.
Cegavske’s office said it appears the old deadline complied with Nevada law but didn’t meet federal requirements.
