Joseph R. Biden had some harsh words Friday for the Republican who wants to replace him as vice president, mocking Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s performance in this week’s debate as a poor attempt to run away from Donald Trump’s record.

Speaking at a campaign rally outside Philadelphia, Mr. Biden marveled at Mr. Pence’s strategy of choosing to ignore many of Mr. Trump’s most controversial statements.

“I’ve been a vice presidential candidate, I’ve been in a few debates, and God, I can’t imagine, I just can’t imagine doing what he had to do for Trump,” he said, then addressing the specific Trump comments raised during the debate that Mr. Pence either sidestepped, claimed had been taken out of context, or had never been uttered at all.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before. Not one slip, not two, not three, not five,” Mr. Biden said. “It’s kind of mind-blowing. It’s awful tough being Donald Trump’s running mate.”

The vice president, an increasingly visible presence on the campaign trail, also told Pennsylvanians that while they may not be “crazy” about Hillary Clinton, they should vote for her anyway to prevent a Republican victory.

“Folks, don’t wake up on Nov. 9 and find out we lost Pennsylvania by 2,000 votes,” he said. “The reason I’m spending so much time in Pennsylvania — if we win Pennsylvania, [Mr. Trump’s] ability to put together the electoral college votes needed is like drawing into an inside straight.”
