TURNER, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he’s proud to be “deplorable,” taking a jab at the insult leveled by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at her rival’s supporters.
LePage made the wisecrack Thursday while introducing Donald Trump’s son, Eric, who came to Maine to stump for his father, the Republican presidential candidate.
The younger Trump, accompanied by his wife Lara, said that if elected his father will reduce taxes and regulations to make it easier for people and businesses to prosper. Lara Trump, meanwhile, described the election as the most important in voters’ lifetimes.
Clinton has apologized for saying half of Trump’s supporters are “a basket of deplorables.”
LePage says he agrees with a T-shirt he saw while campaigning that said “Proud to be a Deplorable.”
