SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - President Barack Obama is granting an Ogden man convicted of a drug crime an early release from prison.
Jimmy Phillip Medina was one of 102 federal inmates given commutations Thursday as President Obama wielded his clemency powers as part of his end-of-term push to spur action on criminal justice reform.
Medina was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2015 after being found guilty of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Medina’s release is contingent on enrolling in a residential drug treatment program.
The latest round of commutations brings to 774 the number of sentences Obama has shortened, including 590 this year. The White House said it’s more than the previous 11 presidents put together.
