DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Durham County leaders have decided that about 800 county employees will get a raise to $15 an hour, and new parents will receive 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
Media outlets report that the new policies were announced Tuesday.
The paternal leave policy begins this month. If both parents are employees, the total unpaid leave can’t exceed 12 weeks.
Previously, eligible employees who had children could take time off through the Family Medical Leave Act.
On Jan. 1, the county will also adjust its living-wage calculation to ensure that all employees make at least $15 an hour. Human Resources manager Tony Noel says the change will affect 832 of the county’s 2,600 employees.
County workers’ minimum salary was previously $26,122 per year. With the change, the minimum annual salary would be $31,200.
