DETROIT (AP) - A diesel engine manufacturer is being fined $14 million over alleged Clean Air Act violations and will spend another $14.5 million on pollutant reduction projects.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department say Thursday that a consent agreement has been reached with Detroit Diesel Corp.
The government says Detroit Diesel sold nearly 7,800 heavy-duty engines for the 2010 model year that were not certified by the EPA and didn’t meet applicable emissions standards.
As part of the deal with the government, Detroit Diesel’s pollutant reduction projects will include replacing high-polluting diesel school buses and locomotive engines with models that meet current emissions standards. The school bus program also will reduce exposure to diesel exhaust in buses.
The Associated Press left a message Thursday seeking comment from Detroit Diesel.
