MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A political action committee that raises money for Republicans campaigning for the Vermont House of Representatives has admitted to violating state campaign finance laws.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/2e2dU4k ) the Vermont House Republican PAC agreed to pay a $2,000 fine and return two contributions they received that violated the law.
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office received a complaint in March 2016 that alerted officials to two contributions made to the PAC by pharmaceutical firm Pfizer Inc. and tobacco company Altria Client Services LLC.
Both companies employ lobbyists in the state and are not permitted to donate to legislative groups such as the PAC during the biennium.
House Republican Leader Don Turner, a Milton Republican, says he should’ve done a better job communicating with Suzanne Butterfield, the PAC’s treasurer.
