MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has canceled an appearance at a Vermont Republican Party fundraiser amid the threat of Hurricane Matthew to her state’s coastline.
The Republican governor was set to serve as the key attraction at the party’s Hilton Hotel fundraiser in Burlington on Wednesday. The event was supposed to feature a private reception with Haley for sponsors before the dinner.
Executive director Jeffrey Bartley says the party found out Haley couldn’t attend on Monday night. Former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift will replace Haley as the keynote speaker.
Bartley says the party supports Haley’s decision to stay in South Carolina and help the state prepare for the approaching storm.
He says the party will honor anyone’s request for a refund. About 200 people are signed up to attend.
