Political pundits have floated a theory around throughout the general election that Donald Trump could melt into a death spiral if he sees the national and state polls turn too much against him.

Perhaps, that same line of thinking should be applied to former President Bill Clinton. It seems Mr. Clinton is one good poll away from realizing: “Heck, I may be first man. Oh hell, no!”

Why else would he pick up a Republican Obamacare attack line at a rally for his wife Hillary Clinton — who is running as President Obama’s third term — unprompted or unprovoked?

“So you’ve got this crazy system where all of a sudden 25 million more people have health care and then the people who are out there busting it, sometimes 60 hours a week, wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half. It’s the craziest thing in the world,” Mr. Clinton said at Democratic rally in Flint, Michigan, on Monday.

The next day, he tried to walk it back, but the damage was done. As Mr. Trump said Tuesday, he bet Mr. Clinton “went through hell last night.”

But that wasn’t all.

On Tuesday, Mr. Clinton attacked Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders who lost the democratic presidential nomination to his wife. They’re on the same side.

In an off-the-cuff response to a heckler at Ohio University, Mr. Clinton defended his controversial 1994 crime bill — by throwing Mr. Sanders under the bus.

“Hillary didn’t vote for the ’94 crime bill even though Sen. Sanders did,” the former president said, as the heckler — who was shouting he couldn’t support someone who sends thousands of people to prison — was removed from the rally.

It leaves one to wonder: What is Mr. Clinton’s end-game here? Is it really to get his wife into White House, or to work against her?

Perhaps Mr. Clinton is one good poll away from throwing it all away.
