NEW YORK (AP) - Officials say at least 19 people, including several firefighters, were hurt after a fire broke out inside a trash compactor on the 10th floor of a New York City apartment complex.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out Monday evening at the city Housing Authority’s Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Towers in Harlem.

Heavy smoke was sent through the hallways of all floors. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the building.

Officials say the blaze has been brought under control. None of the reported injuries are life-threatening.

The Housing Authority didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
