MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Republican Sen. Ron Johnson’s latest attack ad is hitting Democrat Russ Feingold for taking the majority of his campaign donations from people who live outside of Wisconsin, after promising in 1992 not to do that.
Johnson’s campaign says the spot released Tuesday is part of a “multi-million-dollar ad blitz” that includes funding from the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Feingold spokesman Michael Tyler says Johnson is desperate and is spending the last month of the campaign “using money from Washington Republicans insiders to lob up partisan attacks.”
The new Johnson spot contrasts footage of Feingold in 1992 saying the in-state fundraising pledge was “for the future” next to him saying recently that it was for that term only.
About 70 percent of Feingold’s donations have come from out of state.
