SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The University of Rhode Island and an international women’s fraternity have revoked the charter of a campus sorority for five years for an alleged violation of school policy involving alcohol.

WLNE-TV (https://bit.ly/2dUZXpc ) reports that the university’s investigation didn’t find evidence of hazing at Alpha Phi, which was already on social probation.

A statement from URI officials said credible reports indicated that the incident “may have endangered the health and safety of the new members.”

The incident occurred earlier this year on bid day, the culmination of the sorority recruitment process.

The involvement of alcohol is a violation of university policy, the national probation restrictions and Pan-Hellenic recruitment standards.

It’s unclear if Alpha Phi’s URI charter will be automatically re-established in 2021.
