BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Despite the efforts of two men who tried to save a man trapped inside a burning home, there was too much fire and smoke and he died in the blaze in Birmingham.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/2eNzJnD) that two men were passing by Monday morning when they saw the flames. A woman was in the street, screaming that someone was inside.

Desi Harrell said he grabbed his sledgehammer and started smashing windows. He said he and Patrick Madison tried to get to the man, but the smoke was too thick and “it just ran us out.”

Fire officials say a 64-year-old man died in the fire. Another man had been able to make it out.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Capt. Bryan Harrell says the fire appears to have started on a mattress.
