CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois coach Lovie Smith says freshman receiver Dominic Thieman will have surgery Tuesday and miss the rest of the season after being knocked out of Saturday’s loss to Minnesota.

Smith did not provide details Monday but Thieman said on Twitter that he broke an ankle.

Smith said receiver Malik Turner is back with the team but the coach had no other details about Turner’s injury. Turner left the field Saturday on a stretcher after a hit and was briefly taken to a hospital.

Turner leads Illinois with 35 catches for 523 yards and four touchdowns. Thieman has six catches for 32 yards.

Smith also said he does not know if starting quarterback Wes Lunt will play against Michigan State. Lunt is out after hurting his back Oct. 8 against Purdue.
