RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The city of Rutland is awaiting final approval from its Board of Aldermen before taking over responsibility for its Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The Rutland Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2eVG8M6 ) Rutland’s Recreation Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend that the board have the city attorney review the memorial’s trust documents and resubmit them for authorization.
The Rutland chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America has been looking after the Main Street Park monument. With its dwindling and aging membership, the VVA is seeking permanent care for the marble memorial.
The VVA is offering to provide $10,000 to the city to start a maintenance fund. Treasurer Jack Crowther says there will be likely more money when the chapter - the national organization’s first - finally dissolves.
The board of aldermen president supports the proposal.
