PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Democratic Party is suing its Republican counterpart and Donald Trump’s campaign to stop what it believes will be voter intimidation on Election Day.
The suit filed in federal court in Phoenix Monday seeks an order blocking volunteer GOP poll watchers from harassing or photographing people headed to polling locations. The suit says the state Republican Party is essentially an arm of Trump’s campaign and the campaign and its backers have been organizing “citizen journalists” and “poll watchers” to flood minority-heavy polling sites on Nov. 8.
Arizona GOP spokesman Tim Sifert says the party is doing no such thing. The party does send registered observers to silently observe voting, but that’s legal.
Democratic Party Chairwoman Alexis Tameron says the party is worried that ’rogue actors’ will scare off voters.
