NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Plans to build a new public safety complex in North Providence are held up because the town and the Knights of Columbus don’t agree on a purchase price for the organization’s property.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2ebsNzO ) that negotiations to purchase the approximately 39,000-square-foot parcel where the Knights of Columbus hall is located stalled.
The town already owns nearly five acres surrounding the property on Mineral Spring Avenue.
The fraternal organization of Catholic men wants $750,000 but the town is only willing to pay $600,000.
There are conflicting appraisals.
The organization says it received multiple offers of $750,000 and won’t accept less because the proceeds go to charity.
Mayor Charles Lombardi says he’ll build the complex behind the Knights’ hall or pursue the property through eminent domain, if necessary.
