MIAMI (AP) — Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency for every Florida county as Hurricane Matthew’s path moves closer to the state.
Scott was visiting the state’s emergency operations centers along Florida’s east coast Monday. He had canceled Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting to make the trip.
An advisory released Monday evening by the National Hurricane Center shows Florida’s east coast and the Florida Keys in the storm’s potential path.
At 5 p.m., the category 4 hurricane was centered about 225 miles (360 kilometers) south of Port Au Prince, Haiti, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph). The storm was moving north at 7 mph (11 kph).
Matthew’s center of will approach southwestern Haiti Monday night, move near eastern Cuba late Tuesday, and move near or over portions of the southeastern and central Bahamas Tuesday night and Wednesday.
