COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The federal government accuses a South Carolina employment company of discriminating against six disabled men who worked at a turkey processing plant.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Monday it is suing Work Services Inc. of Newberry for exploiting and mistreating men with intellectual disabilities.
The agency alleges the company for years didn’t pay the men or underpaid them, while requiring them to live in substandard conditions in a company bunkhouse across the street from the plant.
The agency says the men were rescued after a New York Times reporter found them in 2014.
Work Services owner Paul Byrd declined to comment when reached by phone Monday.
The U.S. Department of Labor filed a separate suit last December alleging the company failed to pay federal minimum wage and overtime.
