NBA superstar LeBron James endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Sunday night, writing in an op-ed that the former first lady will “build on the legacy” of President Obama and is the only candidate in the 2016 race who truly cares about education, health care and fighting poverty.
In a piece for Business Insider, Mr. James — a three-time NBA champion who captured his latest title last season with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers — didn’t mention Republican Donald Trump by name. Instead, he extolled the virtues of Mrs. Clinton and said the nation’s progress over the past eight years would be undone if she loses in November.
“I support Hillary because she will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama. I believe in what President Obama has done for our country and support her commitment to continuing that legacy,” Mr. James wrote. “Hillary has always been a champion for children and their futures. For over 40 years, she’s been working to improve public schools, expand access to health care, support children’s hospitals, and so much more.”
The basketball star also said Mrs. Clinton is the only candidate who understands tensions between African-American communities and law enforcement. While not mentioning Mr. Trump, he took veiled shots at the Republican billionaire by stressing he believes Mrs. Clinton is the only unifying figure in this race.
“I don’t know everything it will take [to] finally end the violence. But I do know we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified,” he said. “Policies and ideas that divide us more are not the solution. We must all stand together — no matter where we are from or the color of our skin. And Hillary is running on the message of hope and unity that we need.”
