BLOOMFIELD, N.M. (AP) - A pilot escaped serious injury after he had to parachute out of a single-engine plane near Bloomfield.

The Daily Times in Farmington reports (https://bit.ly/2e9fTT7) the incident happened Saturday morning as 53-year-old Robert Hart III, of Pagosa Springs, Colo., was flying from Albuquerque back to Colorado.

According to New Mexico State Police, the Cirrus Model SR22 experienced an engine malfunction around 10 a.m. about 5 miles east of Bloomfield.

Authorities say Hart deployed a parachute and landed safely in an open field.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office detective Lt. Kyle Lincoln says the plane crashed along the San Juan River.

No other injuries were reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been contacted about the crash.
