DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit police officer has died after being struck in a hit-and-run while assisting the investigation of a traffic accident.
The officer was identified as Myron Jarrett, an eight-year veteran nicknamed “Salt and Pepper” by other officers. He was struck Friday night by a cargo-style van moving at high speed. The driver fled on foot but was eventually caught and remained in custody Saturday.
Police Chief James Craig says Jarrett’s colleagues described him as professional and polite, “never angry or frustrated.” Craig says, “He really wanted to make a difference.”
Mayor Mike Duggan says “thoughts and prayers” are with Jarrett’s family.
In September, Detroit police Sgt. Ken Steil was shot while chasing a crime suspect. He died five days later.
