SEA GIRT, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie marked the fourth anniversary of Superstorm Sandy during an event at the Jersey Shore.
The Republican governor took part in the New Jersey National Guard’s military review event at its training center in Sea Girt on Saturday.
It came one day after Christie was heckled by protesters during an event in Seaside Heights and had to temporarily stop speaking about the state’s recovery from the massive storm that hit in October 2012.
Christie said 365,000 homes were damaged in the storm, and 1,700 are still uninhabitable.
The protesters, many of whom remain out of their homes, contended Christie was inflating the original number of damaged homes. They said he was including properties with just minor damage, in an effort to give the appearance that the recovery had been far more successful than it was.
In a statement released by his office Saturday, Christie said the storm “left in its wake a deep sense of despair among all New Jerseyans.” But he said residents responded with strength and “we were able to rebuild, recover, and revitalize what had so quickly been taken away from us.”
Noting that the recovery and rebuilding process is ongoing, Christie said “we have and will continue to work tirelessly to achieve this goal and fully restore our great state.”
