PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) - A Columbia County judge has entered not guilty pleas for a man accused of opening fire on a busy Wisconsin interstate.
Zach Hays of West Allis faces five counts of recklessly endangering safety and fleeing an officer in Columbia County. Online court records indicate Hays stood mute during an arraignment Friday. Judge Todd Hepler entered not guilty pleas for him.
Hays also faces reckless homicide and endangering safety charges in Milwaukee and Sauk counties. Prosecutors allege Hays killed his neighbor, Gabriel Sanchez, on May 1. Later that day he drove northwest. As he was heading south on Interstate 90/94 he allegedly opened fire on a car, killing Tracy Czaczkowski. Hays allegedly shot at another car and fired into the air as police chased him through Columbia County.
