NEWARK, Del. (AP) - University of Delaware administrators and college Republicans are under fire for hosting an anti-transgender speaker.
The News Journal reports (https://delonline.us/2egpgxP) that Milo Yiannopoulos gave a 90-minute talk Monday night criticizing transgender people as “mentally ill,” ’’retarded,” and “very damaged.” The sold-out event was attended by hundreds.
The 32-year-old Brit is an editor for the conservative website Breitbart, as well as openly gay and a supporter of presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Former Delaware GOP Executive Director John Fluharty, who is gay, is among those who have chastised the student group, saying in an email they are “in bed with merchants of hate.”
A week before Yiannopoulos’s appearance, UD President Dennis Assanis wrote an opinion column in the student newspaper describing how great universities are open marketplaces of ideas and conflicting opinions.
