TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The years-long battle over a U.S. Postal Service mail processing center will take center stage on Thursday during a meeting hosted by Rep. Martha McSally in Tucson.

McSally, a Republican, invited U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina to discuss the future of Cherrybell Postal Processing Center. Meadows heads the House subcommittee that oversees USPS.

The government has for years tried to close the processing center in favor of consolidating operations and relocating them to Phoenix.

The meeting will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

McSally and city officials say the closing of the center is unnecessary, would impact the workforce and would result in delayed mail, especially affecting seniors and veterans who rely on the mail for their medications. The Postal Service says the move is necessary to save money.
