BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is reviewing civil rights sites in Anniston and Birmingham for possible inclusion in the National Park system.

Jewell is scheduled to visit both cities Thursday with National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis to see the historic areas and hear public comments on their future.

In Anniston, the group will see a former Greyhound bus station and visit the spot where a bus carrying Freedom Riders was attacked and burned in 1961. Both sites would be included in a proposed Freedom Riders National Historical Park.

In Birmingham, they’ll see a long-closed motel where Martin Luther King Jr. stayed and the park where civil rights demonstrators gathered. Those downtown sites would be included in the proposed Birmingham Civil Rights National Historical Park.
