CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Environmental officials say a fire department well in Kingston, New Hampshire, that was supplying water to residents struggling with drought conditions has shown elevated levels of the industrial chemical PFOA.
The town had requested the Department of Environmental Services test the well. Two separate rounds of test results showed that the well contained 140 parts per trillion of PFOA, which has been linked to cancer and other illnesses, and additional non-regulated perfluorochemicals.
The town was told to stop using the well after the first test on Sept. 30. The town complied and has made water available from the Kingston Community Library, which was tested and didn’t have detectable levels of the chemicals. None of the other wells tested in Kingston exceeded state standards for the chemicals.
