PHOENIX (AP) - Sheriff Joe Arpaio has filed a campaign complaint alleging that a political group funded by liberal hedge-fund tycoon George Soros broke election law in running a TV commercial that opposed the lawman’s re-election campaign.
The complaint alleges Maricopa Strong failed to provide Arpaio’s campaign with a copy of the commercial 24 hours after the group sent it to stations to air.
The ad features a GOP voter who criticized the Republican sheriff’s record in investigating sex crimes against children and expressed support for Democratic challenger Paul Penzone.
Maricopa Strong says in a statement that it provided Arpaio with the appropriate notices.
Soros has contributed $300,000 so far to the group.
Last week, County Attorney Bill Montgomery filed a similar complaint against another Soros-linked committee that opposes his re-election.
