CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Prosecutors say the trial of a former Belknap County sheriff’s deputy who is appealing a sex assault conviction to New Hampshire’s highest court could be delayed until next summer.
The Concord Monitor reports (https://bit.ly/2eIKpkV ) Ernest Justin Blanchette was scheduled to stand trial in Belknap County this past summer on felonious sexual assault charges. A judge recently denied prosecutors’ request to schedule the trial due to a pending decision by the state Supreme Court.
Blanchette was sentenced in May to 10 to 20 years in prison on charges he sexually assaulted an inmate while transporting her from a county courthouse to prison. He now faces similar allegations.
Blanchette’s attorney has until Nov. 7 to file his Supreme Court brief. The attorney general’s office has until Jan. 6 to respond.
