TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - After a nearly two-month process, members of the Tupelo City Council heard a formal package of recommendations designed to foster increased social unity, greater racial harmony and community-wide engagement.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2dK7gLr) this effort by Mayor Jason Shelton’s administration to renew Tupelo’s history of civic cooperation comes in response to protests and discord over a deadly police shooting.

During Tuesday’s work session of the council, recommendations were offered related to law enforcement oversight, community policing, workforce diversity and engagement with the faith community.

A working group of local citizens, city government representatives and city council members studied each of these issues.
