ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (SHNEYE’-dur-muhn) wants the state to stop what his office says is the “rampant misuse” of employee non-compete agreements.
The Democrat on Tuesday proposed legislation that would prohibit companies from asking low-wage workers to sign non-compete clauses. The measure would also require companies to pay workers more if they agree to sign such an agreement.
Schneiderman said the agreements can prevent workers, particularly low-wage ones, from finding new jobs.
In recent months Schneiderman’s office has successfully negotiated with three companies including the Jimmy John’s sandwich chain to curb their use of non-compete agreements.
