WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Donald Trump when he broke ground on his luxury hotel in downtown Washington. But the Democratic mayor won’t be attending the hotel’s official grand opening on Wednesday.

Trump’s company began work transforming the Old Post Office Building into a hotel before Trump announced his run for president. Once he launched his campaign, Bowser distanced himself from him, calling his statements about Mexican immigrants “idiotic.”

The Trump Organization won a 60-year lease from the federal government to turn the building into a luxury hotel. It opened in September.

Instead of the grand opening, Bowser will attend a ceremony marking the transfer of the Army’s former Walter Reed campus to the city, which will be redeveloping the property with a mix of housing and retail.
