DETROIT (AP) - Federal authorities say the owners of 16 adult foster care centers in Michigan have been charged for allegedly failing to pay employment taxes.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday that Jeremiah and Nicolette Cheff of Grand Blanc face 60 counts. Authorities allege that between 2010 and 2014, they withheld payroll taxes from employees’ paychecks and failed to file employment tax returns on time, among other things.
They face a maximum penalty of five years in prison for each count in the indictment, along with supervised release and penalties.
A listed phone number for the owners could not be located Wednesday and it was immediately unclear if they had attorneys.
The centers care for individuals with mental illnesses and disabilities.
