BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say Burlington’s police chief played an integral role in catching a burglar in his own home.
The Hawk Eye (https://bit.ly/2eavr6t ) reports that Chief Doug Beaird became aware of the alleged break-in at his rural Des Moines County home Monday afternoon, when a neighbor called him about a man walking in the area.
Court documents say Beaird drove home and discovered there was camper behind his house and that an unattached garage had been broken into. Beaird called sheriff’s deputies to the scene.
Det. Matt Breckon and Deputy Kevin Glendening responded, and the three men entered the home. They eventually found Daniel Lusk, 25, hiding under a pool table in the basement.
Authorities say Lusk was arrested after a struggle. Beaird suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Police also found a backpack containing knives and cash, and a .38 caliber handgun. Lusk told police that the items belonged to him, according to court records
Lusk has been charged with multiple counts, including second-degree burglary. He faces at least 40 years in prison if convicted of all charges. It wasn’t immediately clear if Lusk has an attorney.
Breckon said the investigation into Lusk’s activities in Des Moines County is ongoing and that additional charges are expected to be filed in the future.
