CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A deer has been tranquilized after being trapped behind a Charleston Town Center Mall stairwell for hours.

Division of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Kem Shaw tells WSAZ-TV (https://bit.ly/2eMMTy9) that one of their employees had to be called in on his day off Monday afternoon to tranquilize the deer, which was removed from the mall.

The deer had been stuck there since earlier that morning.

WOWK-TV reported that officers believe the deer was hit by a car and hobbled to safety behind a generator in the loading zone.

DNR officials say the deer will have to be euthanized because if someone were to hunt and kill the deer for meat, it would be tainted.
