Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday that he plans to cast a vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The retired four-star general, who served as secretary of state under Republican President George W. Bush, made the announcement at the Long Island Association’s fall luncheon.

“She is smart, she is capable, she was a good secretary of state,” he said. “She is balanced, she has temperament and no matter what anyone says, she has stamina.”

Mr. Powell’s endorsement doesn’t come as a complete shock, seeing that he endorsed President Obama in 2008 and 2012. Hacked emails exposed by DC Leaks last month, however, revealed that Mr. Powell had a fair share of criticism for Mrs. Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump.

“Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris,” the former secretary of state wrote in an August 2015 email to Democratic donor Jeffrey Leeds.

In an email sent a month earlier, Mr. Powell described Mr. Trump as “a national disgrace and an international pariah.”
