CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Students at Harvard University are staging a campus sit-in to support the school’s striking cafeteria workers.
Dozens of students walked out of classes Monday and marched to a nearby building where Harvard officials and a labor union for campus dining workers have been in negotiations. The students said they refuse to leave until the university agrees to better wages and health care benefits.
Cafeteria workers at the Ivy League school have been on strike for three weeks after negotiations failed to lead to a new contract. Their union, Unite Here Local 26, is asking Harvard to increase annual salaries to $35,000 and not to increase health care costs.
The university has said the workers already receive generous wages and benefits compared to other food service employees in the region.
