YUKON, Okla. (AP) - Auditors said several inaccuracies in Yukon’s finances appear to be intentional acts of deception by the former city manager.
Yukon officials hired a firm to perform the audit after former city manager Grayson Bottom resigned in December and city staff discovered financial irregularities that left Yukon in a severe budget deficit, The Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/2dPW03g ) reported.
The audit’s findings were presented to the City Council on Thursday. The report said Yukon’s financial balances declined by 44 percent from 2012 to 2015, and the City Council was never informed.
“In the 32 years we have been doing this, this was the worst I have ever seen,” said Frank Crawford, president of Crawford and Associates, the auditing firm hired.
The council was told numerous cases were found in which funds were used outside of their restricted purpose. But the audit showed there’s no evidence of embezzlement or theft.
Bottom declined to comment to The Associated Press on the advice of his attorneys.
The current city manager said the findings have been referred to the proper authorities.
Crawford said the city was on pace to run out of money this year, but increases in revenue streams and staff cutbacks have strengthened the budget. He told the council it could take some years to completely reimburse depleted reserve funds.
