PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Unwanted and expired prescription drugs are being collected throughout New England.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is conducting the prescription drug collection effort with the help of local law enforcement agencies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, for its 12th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Prescription medications can be disposed of at 566 collection sites throughout New England.

The service is free, with no questions asked. Most sites are police department lobbies.

During the last collection effort, the DEA says 86,900 pounds of prescription drugs were collected in New England. Maine collected the most, with nearly 32,000 pounds.

The DEA says medicines languishing in home cabinets can be diverted and abused.

Collection sites can be found on the DEA’s website .
