Fox News host Chris Wallace had the distinct privilege of posing questions to presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton when they debated Wednesday for the last time before next month’s election, but in the aftermath acknowledged he had a hard time getting answers from either.
The “Fox News Sunday” anchor was being interviewed about moderating the final debate on Friday evening’s broadcast of “The O’Reilly Factor” when he admitted both candidates danced around and deflected questions during the entirety of their 90-minute conversation this week.
“Did both of them, in your opinion, answer your questions, or did they dodge, and if so, who dodged the most?” asked host Bill O’Reilly.
“Did they answer my questions? That is the most rhetorical question you ever asked on this show, Bill. Of course they didn’t answer my questions,” replied Mr. Wallace. “Sometimes they did, and sometimes they dodged like crazy.”
According to Mr. Wallace, a registered Democrat, his own party’s candidate was responsible for the majority of the question-dodging.
“I would have to say that Hillary dodged more than Trump did, especially when it came to the question about the Clinton Foundation,” he said. “She dodged more. Sometimes he just didn’t answer the question – but I don’t think he was dodging.”
The Democratic candidate spoke for six minutes longer than her Republican opponent during Wednesday’s debate, according to Mr. O’Reilly — a feat she likely accomplished because Mr. Trump offered shorter responses, his guest suggested.
Mr. Trump “didn’t fill up his time. She took more and, sometimes he just seemed to run out of things to say,” Mr. Wallace said.
“She never ran out of things to say,” Mr. O’Reilly quipped back.
