SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - U.S. Army Central is setting up a special unit in South Carolina devoted to linking up with allied nations, multinational military headquarters and other U.S. military units during overseas deployments.

The unit known as the 2503rd Digital Liaison Detachment is celebrating Friday at a 1 p.m. ceremony at Shaw Air Force Base, where it will be based.

Col. Oscar W. Doward Jr. commands the unit composed of some 30 soldiers.

The unit offers U.S. Army commanders communication capabilities, logistical, and administrative support as they train and conduct military missions.

U.S. Army Central supports and supplies American military forces in the Middle East and central Asian regions, which includes more than two dozen nations stretching from western Africa to Afghanistan.
