BOSTON (AP) - The Latest on two workers killed in Boston after the trench where they were working flooded. (all times local):

8:25 p.m.

The Boston Fire Department says it has recovered the body of the second of two workers who died in a trench that flooded after a water main gave way in the city’s South End neighborhood.

The department says in a Twitter message around 8:15 p.m. Friday that recovery operations are now complete. The bodies are with the medical examiner’s staff and the Boston Police Department.

The department’s message urges people to “remember their families/friends.” The victims have not yet been publicly identified.

Earlier in the evening, the department tweeted how the recovery was a “very difficult operation” and first responders were trying to “respect the deceased while continuing the recovery.”

6:45 p.m.

The Boston Fire Department says it has recovered the first of two workers who died in a deep trench that became flooded after a water main gave way.

Crews were still working into the night on Friday to recover the second body.

The fire department sent out a message on Twitter around 6:30 p.m., saying the first victim had been recovered and the body was with the medical examiner’s staff and the Boston Police Department. Earlier in the evening, the department tweeted how its technical rescue crew was working in a trench box, on their knees gently removing dirt with their hands to reach the workers.

The department called it “a very difficult operation” and how the first responders were trying to “respect the deceased while continuing the recovery.”

Boston officials say a water main gave way in the city’s South End neighborhood, flooding a trench and killing two workers.

Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans confirmed the two fatalities Friday afternoon.

The workers were trapped in the 20-foot-wide trench when the water main broke Friday afternoon. Evans says the incident “looks like an accident” and police officers near the scene realized “very quickly that we had workers trapped in the hole.”

Water has been shut off to the area. Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald says the workers were with a private contractor

Fire department spokesman Steve MacDonald tells The Associated Press a worker became trapped in the 20-foot-wide trench when the water main broke Friday afternoon. He says a recovery effort is continuing and it’s not yet known if anyone else was in the trench.

Water has been shut off to the area.

McDonald had no immediate information on the identity of the person who died or what type of work was being done at the time
